Today, I was delighted to visit to Thornton College in Liverpool to officially open their new building on behalf of the Montse Benítez Foundation. The college will provide vocational studies, and everyday life skills education, for students between Imagenthe ages of 16 – 19 who have physical and learning difficulties.

Although there are only 16 students at the moment in the college, they have the facilities to support up to 60 students.

The college is a joint venture with Hugh Baird College, Sefton Council, and local special schools.

On arrival, after being met by the Chair of Governers, I was then given a tour of the college and its facilities by Matt Wilson, the Centre Manager, and Alun Owen. Matt explained how that the supported learning the College offers, has not been available locally until now, and just how valuable it will prove to be for the future well-being of the students.

On returning to the guests, including students and their parents, I said a few word before officially opening the college with the unveiling of the plaque. I then enjoyed some time chatting with the students, and had some photos taken with them. One young student, Chris Booth, made us all chuckle as he didn’t know I was coming to the college, but on seeing me just got so excited - it was a lovely moment we all shared!

ImagenI also chatted to the parents about how the courses and facilities on offer will have a positive influence on their children’s confidence, and their future.

I would like to express my thanks to Hugh Baird College, and Sefton Council for their warm welcome, and hospitality received today. Also special thanks to the students for making the time I spent with the, so memorable.
