Last year a group of keen local police cyclists did a sponsored ride from London to Paris in aid of the Foundation. This year they set themselves a new challenge by setting their starting point in Madrid – Rafa’s home town. Again all the Sponsorship money would go the Foundation.

A team of 5 riders and a back up driver set off : Graham Parker, Neil Kennedy, Derek Murphy, Mark Broderick and Roy McGregor on the bikes and Mark Joynson in the van.

The ride covered over 400 miles in 4 days in some very rural parts of Spain and much hillier terrain than they were used to in the UK. After the first day the weather was kind and the managed over 100 miles a day. Day 1 Madrid to Toledo achieved 110 miles their best days run.

Day 2 Toledo to Pedro Muñoz 100 miles. Much more rural now and cycling 5 abreast was possible at times. Day 3 Pedro Muñoz to Tarancón 103 miles. Good local inns to rest up in at night – only Spanish spoken making a further interesting challenge. Day 4 Tarancón to Madrid 104 miles. The hills were taking their toll now and tired legs were struggling to push the bikes over the crests. But overall a Great Adventure said Graham Parker.

So a fantastic ride and even more fantastic results – over £2400 raised in sponsorship money! The Foundation Trustees wish to thank the police for their dedication, in both time and commitment, and of course the many sponsors who contributed to the final result. This money in total will be passed on to the local charity mutually agreed.
